The following businesses are on here because they have been recommended to me or because I have used their services. Almost all of them have given me 3 references which I have called most of them and they all received good comments. Of course I can not and will not guarantee their work and you should always do your own due diligence when preparing to hire anyone. You may call the Better Business Bureau at 619-496-2131 or The Contractors State License Board at 800-321-2752 or www.cslb.ca.gov. CSLB suggests you get a copy of the contractors Liability Insurance and their Workers Comp Insurance (sent direct from their insurance carrier). You can also call CSLB to see of the license is valid and current and if there are any prior legal actions or disclosable complaints. It is illegal for an unlicensed person to perform contracting work on any project valued at $500 or more in labor and materials. Besides being illegal, unlicensed contractors lack accountability and have a high rate of involvement in construction scams. They also are unfair competition for licensed contractors who operate with bonds, insurance and other responsible business practices. There are about 44 different types of contractors licenses. For more detail, you can get a free copy of the CSLB's "Guide to Hiring a Contractor from CSLB" from Dennis and Sunshine.
Your contract is extremely important. Read it carefully. Never sign a blank contract. A contractor is limited to a down payment of $1000 or 10% whichever is less except for swimming pools at $200 or 2%, whichever is less. You have a 3 day right to cancel with some exceptions. Get your warranties in writing. Most contractor work requires a permit. Zoning varies. Call the local building department for information on zoning or permits. And remember "If it is too good to be true, it probably is".
Permits are very important. Your insurance company will probably disallow any claim if it started or involves anything that should have been permitted.
